West Ham United winger Robert Snodgrass shone in his team’s 8-0 thrashing of League Two strugglers Macclesfield Town in the third round of the Carabao Cup at the London Stadium on Wednesday night, and Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to keep the Scot during the summer is proving to be his best of the entire summer.
What’s the word, then?
Well, after failing to make an impression having joined the Irons from Hull City in January 2017, former Hammers boss Slaven Bilic sent the wide man to Aston Villa on a season-long loan deal for the 2017/18 campaign.
Despite the fact he impressed by scoring eight goals and providing a further 13 assists in 43 Championship appearances as Steve Bruce’s men narrowly missed out on promotion back to the Premier League, it still didn’t appear as though he had a future when he returned to his parent club following the arrival of Pellegrini as manager.
However, the Chilean boss gave the 31-year-old plenty of game time during pre-season even though Villa were reportedly keen to re-sign the Scottish star, who is said to earn £60,000-a-week, and that theme has continued into the current campaign.
Why was it his best decision?
Even if Snodgrass didn’t impress in the initial spell after signing, he has gone from strength to strength in recent weeks.

He has started three of their six Premier League matches to date – also coming off of the substitutes’ bench in the other three – while he shone against Macclesfield on Wednesday with two goals and two assists in the thumping.
His attitude, work rate and the quality that he has in open play and from set-pieces mean that even if he isn’t in the starting XI, he will push the likes of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko to be even better as he fights for a spot in Pellegrini’s team – as a result, keeping him is proving to the former Manchester City boss’ best summer decision.
