The agent of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has distanced his client from a summer move to Napoli.
The Slovakian international’s future at Anfield has come under serious doubt in recent months, after he lost his place in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI towards the back end of last season.
With a number of centre-backs said to be on their way to the Reds once the transfer window opens, Skrtel is believed to be surplus to requirements.
This has led to links with a number of clubs, with former boss Rafael Benitez said to be keen to take the no-nonsense defender to the San Paolo.
However, the 28-year-old’s agent, Karol Csonto, says that a move away from the Premier League is unlikely, and that Napoli cannot afford a deal.
“Martin to move away from Liverpool? I specifically say that Skrtel has never said he wants to go away, then it depends on the Liverpool market because everything could change,” he is quoted by Sky Sports via Tuttomercatoweb.
“It’s true that the last two seasons were difficult but in football it can happen.
“Napoli? I think they haven’t the financial possibilities to take him. Liverpool has not decided a price because they don’t intend to sell the player. Anyway, I don’t think that Napoli can afford his wage.”
Skrtel has also been linked with a return to Zenit Saint-Petersburg, with the big-spending Russian side said to be highly interested.
Would it be best for everyone if Martin Skrtel leaves Liverpool? Or should he be given another chance?
